Sash Window Restoration in Sheffield.

Sheffield has thousands of original Victorian and Edwardian sash windows, particularly across Crookes, Nether Edge, Ranmoor, Dore and Totley. Restoring and painting them properly is a specialist job: paint stripping, putty replacement, draft strip, sash cord checks, then a paint system that lets the wood breathe.

For Conservation Area properties we work to the original paint colour where required. For non-listed properties you have free rein on colour. Either way the paint system is the same: stripped to bare wood where needed, primer, two coats of microporous topcoat suited to single-glazed sash work.

Draft proofing happens at the same time if needed: brush-pile carriers in the staff and parting beads, sash cord replacement if cords are perished. Done together it is much cheaper than splitting the work.

What is included

  • Strip old flaking paint, fill and sand bare wood
  • Putty repair or full replacement where needed
  • Microporous paint system for breathability
  • Optional draft strip in the same visit
  • Sash cord replacement if cords have perished

Common Questions

Sash Windows questions

The questions Richard gets asked most often at the kitchen door. If yours is not here, ring him.

What colour can I paint sash windows in a Sheffield Conservation Area?
In Conservation Areas like Crookes, Nether Edge, Dore and Totley you usually need to match the original colour, often white, cream or a heritage off-white. Listed properties have stricter rules. We can advise based on the property and check planning if needed.
Can you fix broken sash cords too?
Yes. Broken cords are common in 100-year-old windows. We can replace them while we have the sashes out for painting, which is much cheaper than a separate callout.
