Walkley sits up the hill west of town, between Upperthorpe and Crookes, and it reads as a Victorian terrace village with a working high street of independents on South Road. The thing that sets Walkley apart from Hillsborough is the stone. Where S6 terraces down the hill are red brick, a lot of Walkley fronts are sandstone, ashlar or rock-faced, with brick at the rear. That one detail changes the whole paint specification on a front elevation.
Sandstone needs to breathe. The common mistake we get called out to fix is a standard plastic masonry paint slapped over the stone, which traps moisture behind the film until the stone starts spalling. On a Walkley sandstone front we use a breathable silicate mineral paint, the kind that bonds to the stone chemically and lets water out. The brick rear can take a normal masonry product. Front and back are not the same job, and anyone quoting them as one is not looking at the house properly.
There is a conservation angle here too. The Birkendale Conservation Area sits in the heart of Walkley, around Birkendale Road and Birkendale View, and Sheffield Council has an Article 4 Direction in force in several of the city's conservation areas. One of the things it controls is painting a house, and changing the colour of an already-painted front. Walkley is also one of the highest points in the city, and west-facing fronts catch the wind-driven rain straight off the Pennines. That is the difference between a 10 to 12 year front and a 4 to 5 year one.
A good share of the older terraces still have their original timber sash windows, especially the streets near Bole Hill Recreation Ground. Those sashes were built from slow-grown softwood that outlasts modern joinery, and inside the conservation boundary swapping them for uPVC will usually mean being told to put timber back. We restore in place: sash-cord renewal, draft seals, scrape and sand to bare wood, then a Sandtex 365 or Dulux Weathershield system. A pair takes about a day.
A meaningful part of Walkley is student lets, and the landlord repaint between tenancies tends to be magnolia rolled over poor prep. By the time we get a proper repaint there can be three or four coats of flaking magnolia to strip back before any decent finish goes on. We do not skip that. Most of the cost on a terrace interior is the prep, the filling, caulking, and sanding back. The emulsion is the last day's work.

Are my sash windows worth restoring?
